A little lesson

In my previous post I mentioned the fact the council had stopped my housing benefit due to my “ESA having ceased”

According to the dictionary:

cease
siːs/
verb
  1. come or bring to an end.
    “the hostilities ceased and normal life was resumed”
    synonyms: come to an end, come to a halt, come to a stop, end, halt, stop, conclude,terminate, finish, wind up, draw to a close, be over, come to a standstill;

    pause, break off;
    peter out, fizzle out, abate, fade away, die away
    “hostilities had ceased”
    bring to an end, bring to a halt, bring to a stop, end, halt, stop, conclude,terminate, finish, wind up, discontinue, desist from, refrain from, leave off,quit, shut down, suspend, break off, cut short
    “they were asked to cease all military activity”

    Now I think from that when I see a letter stating my ESA had ceased, I would be correct in my thinking that my ESA had stopped.

    No I and anyone else that had thought that would be wrong. My council’s meaning of the word ceased means changed, which although I was unaware of, doesn’t put me in so much of a tizz as it being stopped.
