It might have escaped your notice, but I am moving, in this, I am doing so many things and hitting so many brick walls.
In the UK renting is something that has only really recently happened, I know its a lot more common in other countries and the laws are more robust to protect tennants.
Here in the UK you might find that you have to move every 6 months, you might never get your home, where you stay for longer. Sometimes you might get lucky and stay for 4 or 5 years. The landlord, here, can give you 2 months notice for whatever reason, be it they want to sell the house or they just want you out. There are many stories out there about tennants having to leave, knowing full well that they are having to leave their home, because the landlord can earn more rent, but it unable to put it up more than 10% a year.
Buying has become a lot harder that it use to be, but even so, the most annoying thing is that despite being able to prove that you are paying more rent a month than a mortgage chances are you won’t be able to afford a deposit. It really frustrated me 5 years ago, when we had a massive deposit, could prove our rent was more than a mortgage payment, but was able to get a foot on the ladder because our earnings were under what they wanted.
Which brings me to estate agents are renting. I get the rules about landlords not wanting pets, not wanting kids, not wanting people on benefits. What I really hate is the rule most seem to have about earning 30 times than the rent. In this part of the country to be able to get a 2 bed anything you are looking at £800, so you would be looking at a minimum of £24,000 a year, none of this can be from benefits. It literally rules out a family on minimum wage, most of who are on some type of benefit.
Finally the one that really killed me today, was other councils, I have been trying to get onto their housing list, most don’t accept you unless you have some sort of a link with the area. I get that, some accept you if you work their, this doesn’t include the council where my partner works, so I got clever and pointed out that we have my stepson there so we have a bigger link. This is what they said.
Your partners son does not count as a close relative. A close relative is a mother, father, brother or sister that have lived in the area for 5 years. Keep in mind I am less than 2 miles from the fucking area, and when did a child not be a fucking close relative.
