If you were given a months salary for free, what would you do with it?

  2. Put it in my retirement account. I want to stop working asap! Every little bit helps.

    • Does America have pensions? Or is retirement account the same thing (if you know)

      • Pensions used to be fairly common during the Industrial Age of the US. Not common at all anymore, unless a teacher, state employee, or maybe a union-covered trade/factory job. Most retirement savings come from ones contribution to 401K’s at their job, with a percentage matched by the employer, or through IRA’s, ones own retirement/savings accounts invested for them by financial planners or brokerage firms, for a fee of course. Some trade on their own, through websites and commercial investment firms. The ones we see on tv and whom fork over millions to put their names on pro sports stadiums…with profits from all those small to mid-sized clients’ expense, of course…, but that’s risky. In other words, besides Social Security, most people have to save on their own and pray the market is profitable. I think most Americans rely on minimal to no savings and Social Security for post-work income, which generally isn’t much. Combine that with choking amounts of debt that millions of Americans have compiled to make ends meet…or to keep up with the Jones’…and retirement is anything but a reality. So, some older folks still work in some way to supplement, possibly never “retiring”, unless health forces it. Kinda sad state of affairs for lots and lots of people. 😕

      • A 401K sounds very similar to what we have here, and like you guys, its not enough anymore. But we are only just starting to figure that out, the social pension is tiny and from what I gather, my generation is paying into it but its paying for the generation that is already retired, so eventually we are going to run out. Added to this, with previous generations owning your home was a given, now with care homes, if you own a home that is the first thing sold (unless you have enough money to self fund) or you go into a state funded home, which are not great. Where as parents would leave the house to the next generation that is no longer happening, so my generation is going to hit a barrier, where we dont have any savings for our old age, the state pension is not going to be enough or maybe not exist nor is our work pensions going to be enough, and if we need to go into a care home, they are going to be full (the state ones) with not enough carers to manage and our rental laws are not up to date enough to cope with long term rentals (we get 6 months at a time, with a 2 month clause to leave if the landlord wants us to for any reason)

Basically, like you our older people are now working alot longer and many are finding it difficult

      • It sucks, but most folks are woefully prepared for retirement, if they’re able to retire at all. 😕
