Where in the World: Laos

Once again I have come across a country and I know nothing about and last year I am not sure I knew exsisted, so I am excited to learn a little bit about the country

  1. Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, it is boarded by Myanmar and China in the northwest, Vitenam in the east, Cambodia to the southeast and Thailand to the west and southwest.
  2. Despite the fact it is landlocked, it does have thousands of islands, in the south of the country is Si Phan Don which is one of the natural attractions due to Mekong River
  3. It is the most bombed country in the world, due to the Vietnam war, it is estimated that 30% of those bombs didn’t explode, so they still kill people today. However this gave us the The City of Victory which is a set of limestone caves, where 20,000 Laotians hid from the bombs, it includes schools, banks and even an elephant enclosure
  4. You can see lots of wildlife here, its the breeding ground of the King Cobra, white cheeked gibbons, Asian Black Bears and tigers among alot of others.
  5. Be careful with the local drink, Lao-Lao is a rice whisky and very cheap, it might cause blindness
  6. On the Xiangkhoang Plateau is a place called The Plain of Jars, the whole landscape is strewn with jars, dating back all the way to the stone age, no one is sure what they are doing there, but my fav theory that I found was they once contained whisky for giants
  7. The Mekong River is not just a famous natural attraction it is the lifesource of the country, not only provides transportation, trade, it provides electricity as well as fishing source for a landlock country. It is called Mae Nam Khong by the locals which means mother of all rivers
  8. Laos translates to the Land of a Million Elephants, while you can still see wild Elephants their numbers have dwindled
  9. If you want to come here for a holiday, you can stay in treehouses in Nam Kan National Park of Laos
  10. Here is some traditional music for you

Are you from Laos? Say ສະບາຍດີ
