Where in the World: Haiti

I love learning about this part of the world, I know so little about it

  1. Haiti shares the island, Hispaniola, with Dominican Republic. its east of Cuba and Jamaica and south of The Bahamas
  2. The Haitian Revolution was the only succesful slave revolt in human history (I cant summarise it, in one sentence but google it)
  3. Voodoo is an officially recognised religon, here the only country in the world that has it as an offical religion
  4. Haiti is one of the most densely populated countries in the world
  5. While its claimed that Christopher Columbus discovered this country, sometimes history glosses over the fact, that it was already inhabited by The Taino tribe, their population went from 400,000 to 60,000 and ten year after Columbus arrived only 3,000 Taino remained in the country
  6. Cockfighting is one of the traiditonal sports, the roosters are fed hot peppers and raw meat with rum to make them more aggresive
  7. At least 40% of the population is under 14, this has led to many orphans and homeless children
  8. There are no railroads here
  9. For Christmas, they whitewash trees and/or their houses
  10. Enjoy
