I got to see some of my extended family, but it was terrifying small; attendance was abysmal. I wish we could go back to the way it was…. but, we can’t. So what used to be about half of my mother’s family showed up every single year pre-covid. Now…less than 1/5 of them were there.

is there a reason for that?

Covid.
Before Covid, we got together every year and saw each other all the time throughout the year since we all live close.
Since covid no one wants to go to a large gathering. 200 people in a restaurant is a big gathering. Especially when they all want to hug and kiss you and get pissy when you keep your mask on to do it.

Maybe in a few years, once it has calmed down a bit and we have more of a knowledge about it

No. Probably not. I don’t know. It feels like it will never go back to what it was. There are reasons for that theory too.
My mother was the youngest of 18. Everyone that got together were their children and grandchildren and them, etc. Now, all that’s left is my one aunt, that does the cryptograms, and my one uncle. He came with his wife and made his two sons and their families and his daughter and her family all come. My aunt strong armed the rest of us. Between the two of them, this is what we could get together. And… there aren’t presents anymore. Haven’t been for a decade. Everyone’s been getting together because it made our parents happy. I went because my aunt made me promise and because my father told me that if I didn’t he’d kill me because he didn’t want to go but my sister was making him so I had to suffer too. I was going, but I knew why he was demanding I go, and I had to drive him crazy first. It’s my job.
But, I have a feeling that someday, unfortunately fairly soon inthe grand scheme of things, this annual gathering will have ended and there will be no one still screaming for it. Covid or not.
Doesn’t help that 2020 literally took three of my aunts, one of my uncles and my mom. None of them were from covid either. It was just a horrible 3+ months (Feb 30 was my uncle. Then it just kept happening until my mom on June 20).

I am sorry, that sounds like a really tough time for you.

Nothing to be sorry about. Some times things just end. And I get it. My dad doesn’t, but I do.

My family is very like that, we use to have a family party once a year, but with deaths and births and life it hasnt happened for at least 7 years

I know how hard it can be, and I’m sorry. I also know it’s part of life. I just remember never even thinking it was a possibility as a kid. It just was. Then, it started to change and change. Then it was a ghost of its former self. Now, it’s just the bones.

Wow… that’s a long time. When the world stops ending, maybe you can force everyone to come to something

I’m sure it would still be nice if you sold him to the highest bidder who agreed to make sure he had to do homework 24 hours a day lol

He would love that

Then he is truly special because homework is evil. Unless you’re the parent lol
