Where in the World: El Salvador

I feel I should know more about this country than I actually do, lets see if I do actually know as much as I think

  1. El Salvador, is bordered by Honduras on the northeast and Guatemala on the northwest. to the south is the Pacific Ocean
  2. El Salvador’s nickname is Land of the Volcanos, it has over 100 volcanos, 20 of which are thought to be active
  3. Paleo-Indian people have inhabited El Salvador for over 10,000 years.
  4. Almost 85% of this country’s forests have disappeared since the 1960s
  5. El Salvador has the highest murder rate in the world, to give this some context, in August 2019 it celebrated its 8th murder free day since 2000
  6. If you love surfing this is the place to go, it is well known for its surfing
  7. People here only use the initial to call their friends and family
  8. They love their phones here, 125 phones to every 100 people
  9. In 1969, there was a war which is known as the football war, it actually has nothing to do with football, and is also known as the 100 hour war
  10. Marimba seems to be the traditional music, first introduced by African slaves. I have had some difficulty in finding the right thing, but I believe it is this

  2. You got it, that’s Marimba! El Salvador’s people do not have it easy. United Fruit (now Chiquita) has controlled their land for 100 years.

    Such interesting and sometimes shocking facts here. Highest murder rate is something to be concerned about perhaps, although since the people have existed there for 10,000 years despite all those volcanoes I guess they must be doing something right. Is it a poor country, could that be why the crime rate is high ?
